Housed at Northern Marianas College as part of NMC's Library Programs and Services, the CNMI Archives are dedicated to promoting the archival mission of preserving historical, political and cultural records, texts, audio-visual materials, and artifacts of enduring value for the people of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Micronesian region.
Northern Marianas College is mandated by Commonwealth law to "maintain[] the Commonwealth archives, United States, South Pacific Commission and Commonwealth government documents which shall include at least three copies of all publications funded in whole or in part by the Commonwealth government, or by any regional association or agency receiving local or federal funds to provide services to the region, minutes of all meetings held by Commonwealth boards, commissions or agencies, the official actions of the Commonwealth Legislature, and any other official record of the Commonwealth deemed by the archivist to have permanent historical, legal or political significance, and acquiring any other materials relating to the Commonwealth or region that has research or historical value." 3 CMC § 1305(b)(5). Commonwealth entities under the jurisdiction of the Open Government Act are also specifically required by law to provide the CNMI Archives with minutes of their meetings. 1 CMC 9914. Today, the CNMI Archives hold over 500 reels of microfilm pertaining to the CNMI Constitution, the Covenant Negotiations, and Public Laws from the CNMI Legislature from 1978 - 2007.
The archival collection also includes 3,000 reels of microfilm from the former Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands Government, records of the Spanish Colonial Government of the Mariana Islands from 1678 - 1899, and over 139 reels of microfilm courtesy of the Australian Archives on the Military Administration of the German New Guinea Possessions from 1914 - 1923.
Supporting NMC's instructional mission and research, the CNMI Archives is an invaluable resource for students and faculty, and its holdings are available to all members of the public. The CNMI Archives is also the most comprehensive archival repository of CNMI government records that exist.
