The latest news from Northern Marianas College

During its recent regular board meeting on June 27, 2024, the Northern Marianas College (NMC) Board of Regents adopted a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy aimed to enhance the educational experience for students, faculty, and staff.

Developed through extensive research and collaboration across college stakeholders, the new policy is the first of its kind in the CNMI and underscores NMC’s commitment to leveraging new technology to enhance learning, foster innovation in research and problem-solving, and prepare its students for the evolving job market.

“Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence is not just about staying current with technological advancements; it's about redefining the future of education, especially for us here in the CNMI,” said NMC Board Chairman Charles V. Cepeda. This policy represents our College’s unwavering commitment to providing our students with the tools and opportunities they need to excel in an increasingly digital world, while equipping our faculty and staff to be more productive and efficient with their work.”

Key Highlights of the NMC AI Policy:

  • Enhanced Learning Experiences: The AI policy allows for the integration of advanced AI tools and platforms into NMC course curriculum, enabling personalized learning experiences that cater to individual student needs and learning styles. This initiative aims to improve student engagement, retention, and success.
  • Ethical AI Use: NMC will enforce the safe and ethical use of AI technologies, creating guidelines for faculty and students to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability of AI processes within coursework. The College will continuously monitor and evaluate AI implementations to uphold these standards through procedures.
  • Research and Innovation: The AI policy encourages interdisciplinary research and collaboration within current initiatives and future projects.
  • Workforce Development: The AI policy will empower NMC to provide training and support not just for its faculty and staff, but also for the greater CNMI community to promote digital literacy and inclusivity within the evolving workforce.

“We are excited to introduce this new AI policy, which represents a significant step forward in our mission to cultivate stewardship through scholarship,” said NMC President Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD. “By not shying away from AI, we are boldly integrating it into our educational framework and our administrative processes, enhancing our productivity, promoting ethical practices and responsibility, and engaging our community, so that NMC can continue serving as the beacon of hope for the CNMI during this critical time.”
